I purchased a 1988 950 which has an after-market power steering assist. It means that all hydraulic fluid goes through a screw-on filter before getting to the hydraulic pump. In cold weather, this line cavitates as it is trying to draw fluid through the filter. This keeps all hydraulic movements limited until the engine warms completely (approx. 30 minutes). In addition I find that the power assist is only helpful in right-hand turns. Turning left is manual. Are there ways to use a coarser screen in the screw-on filter to keep the line from cavitating? Is the power assist meant to be helpful in only one direction or is a valve stuck?

WPB I doubt it is ment to only work one way. I have a 1982 950 and am wanting to add power steering to it, but havent been able to locate a kit. If anyone knows where to get one maybe both of us can get our needed parts

Sounds like the John Deere system ? my power steering works great both ways . power steering was a deeler instaled kit . check to see if spool valve on your drag link is moving in both dirctions rock the steering wheel back and forth the center of the spool valve sould pull in and out 1/8"to1/4" each way off center and you my want to check the standard screen filter that is in a housing under the transmisson also I use john deere low viscosity hy-gard oil in my 950 ....

Thanks for the tip. I understand that the spool valve is the one marked in and out. This shaft moves ever so slightly when turning the steering wheel. This may need adjustment, somehow. The filter on the transmission was replaced recently as well as adding low vis hy-gard hydraulic oil. I have heard from one dealer that some folks by-pass the screw-on filter to improve fluid flow as well as activate the PTO to circulate fluid in cold weather. (I activate the PTO just in case, although the difference is not noticable. ....

Something that may help with the flow is to close the hydraulic stop valve under the seat and just crack it open while you let the machine warm up. The restriction heats the fluid, just make sure you open it prior to heading out.
I am assuming the 950 has this valve like my 750. This is John deeres recommendation right out of the manual. ....

Your tractor might be a candidate for a full synthetic hydraulic fluid. "Cold" performance is greatly enhanced. ....

I was assuming the spin-on filter is standard factory equipment and has nothing to do with the PS. I reread the original post and now I'm not sure. I guess a connection between the PS and cold weather cavitation might be the additional flow required by the PS.
It's hard to believe a factory system wouldn't be designed to work in cold weather with or without added PS and that owners resort to bypassing their filters. Stranger things have happened I guess. However, if the condition exists, Mark's comment about synthetics is good and I'll add a couple of minor ideas. I do use two magnetic heaters on the oil sump when it's very cold. I'm not sure how much warmer the oil actually gets but I use them anyway.
Filter specs often include a micron rating. Generally people look for the smallest rating but finding a courser filter would be better than bypassing it. In addition, all filters aren't created equal. Some have more filter area than others. If the filter area is speced, I'd look for the largest area I could find and I wouldn't assume that a factory filter would be the best one. Comparing the number of pleats in the paper on cut away views might be a decent substitute for area specs.
I'm a bit curious how the drag link control spool works and I hope a way to adjust it has been found. It's probably similar to my Ford PS. The control valve is actuated by the steering wheel shaft. Thrust from turning the steering wheel moves the valve up or down, and the valve remains active as long as pressure is held on the steering wheel. I don't think there are any adjustment procedures for my unit except for the relief valve pressure.

Thanks for all the helpful information. It looks like I have to do more homework on the filter size and valve assembly. I appreciate the comments and look forward to a quick spring here in Maine after, what seemed like a very cold winter. Happy tilling! ....
